- 40% of adults in Wales drink above safety level guidelines.
- 20% of the Welsh adult population admits to binge drinking.
- Alcohol related hospital admissions are increasing and costs the NHS at least £32m per year.
- The estimated health service cost in Wales of alcohol related chronic disease and alcohol related acute incidents is between £70 million and £85 million each year.
- There are 520 alcohol related admissions every day in Welsh hospitals.
- 15% of all hospital admissions in Wales are due to alcoholic intoxication.
- Liver disease (of which alcohol is a major cause) is responsible for around 1,600 admissions every year.
- 30,000 hospital beds are lost to alcohol every year.
- All Wales alcohol related deaths increased from 10 per 100,000 in 1998 to 14 per 100,000 in 2004.
- 7% of 11-year-old girls and 12% of boys drink on a weekly basis.
- 25% of 13-year-old girls and 33% of boys drink on a weekly basis.
- 50% of 15-year-old girls and 60% of boys in Wales drink on a weekly basis – highest rates in Europe.
- 54,000+ violent crime incidents are linked to alcohol.
